Exporting AI-Generated Notes to TherapyNotes
Short answer: No direct integration exists yet between Scriber and TherapyNotes. Copy-paste is the workflow: generate the note in Scriber, review it, and paste it into TherapyNotes' progress note field. This takes 2–3 minutes and is the standard workflow for all AI scribes until TherapyNotes exposes a public clinical-note API.
TherapyNotes is popular with solo and small-group therapy practices because it is purpose-built for behavioral health, affordable, and has a good balance of features without overwhelming complexity. The cost is lower than SimplePractice and the learning curve is shorter. The trade-off is that TherapyNotes also does not have a public API for writing notes, so the same copy-paste workflow applies.
Why there is no direct integration yet
TherapyNotes has been cautious about third-party integrations for clinical notes. They expose APIs for reading data (so you can export notes for backup) but not for writing notes. That is changing — they are building integrations — but until a public API is available, any third-party AI scribe has to use the copy-paste workflow.
This is not unique to Scriber. Every AI scribe, dictation tool, and external note-generation service uses copy-paste into TherapyNotes. It is the standard workflow.
The copy-paste workflow
Step 1: Record and transcribe in Scriber.
Open Scriber. Get verbal consent to record (Scriber has a built-in consent prompt). Record your session normally. When the session ends, Scriber transcribes the audio (usually within 30 seconds to 5 minutes depending on your transcription engine choice). Review the transcript for accuracy and make any corrections.
Step 2: Generate the note.
Click "Generate Note." Scriber shows a dropdown of note formats. Select the format that matches your TherapyNotes expectations (SOAP, DAP, BIRP, intake, etc.), or use your default if you have set one. Click "Generate."
The AI-generated note appears within 60 seconds.
Step 3: Review and edit the note.
Read through the generated note. Check for:
- Speaker attribution (are statements attributed to the correct person in couples or group therapy?)
- Medical terminology (are clinical terms spelled correctly and used appropriately?)
- Logical flow (does the Assessment reflect the Subjective and Objective sections?)
- Tone (does it sound like your notes or generic AI?)
- Missing elements (did you mention a homework assignment that the AI missed?)
Most clinicians spend 3–5 minutes here. Edit any sections that need adjustment.
Step 4: Copy the finalized note.
Select all the text (Cmd+A on Mac, Ctrl+A on Windows). Copy it (Cmd+C or Ctrl+C). Some Scriber interfaces include a copy button; use that if available.
Step 5: Open TherapyNotes and navigate to the client's chart.
Log in to TherapyNotes. Search for or navigate to the client. Click "Progress Notes" (or the equivalent section for your TherapyNotes version).
Step 6: Create a new note or open today's note.
Click "New Note" or "Add Note." TherapyNotes will prompt you to set the date (today) and session type. Fill in those details. The main note field will be empty and ready for text input.
Step 7: Paste the note.
Click into the main note text field. Paste the text (Cmd+V or Ctrl+V). The AI-generated note appears.
Step 8: Fill in required fields.
TherapyNotes may require:
- Session duration (e.g., "60 minutes"): Enter the actual session length.
- Session type (e.g., "Individual therapy," "Intake," "Couples therapy"): Select from TherapyNotes' dropdown.
- Billing code (optional): TherapyNotes often auto-fills this based on session type.
- Next session date (optional): You can fill this in or leave it blank.
Most of these are single selections and take 30 seconds.
Step 9: Review formatting and save.
TherapyNotes will display the note with their formatting. Scan it quickly to confirm it is readable. If the note looks correct, click "Save" or "Complete Note." The note is now in your signed chart.
Step 10: Sign or mark as reviewed (optional).
Depending on your TherapyNotes settings, you may need to sign the note or mark it as reviewed. TherapyNotes has a supervisor co-signature feature; if you use that, your supervisor will review and co-sign after you save.
Full workflow time: 3–5 minutes for review and copy-paste.
Optimizing for TherapyNotes
Match note format to TherapyNotes defaults.
TherapyNotes defaults to SOAP notes for progress notes and has a specific intake template. If you set SOAP as your default in Scriber, the generated note will already be formatted correctly for TherapyNotes without extra editing. If you use a custom template, confirm it matches TherapyNotes' layout expectations.
Use TherapyNotes' session type selection to guide Scriber template choice.
In TherapyNotes, you select "Intake," "Individual Progress Note," "Couples Therapy Note," etc. Use that same categorization in Scriber. If you selected "Couples Therapy" in TherapyNotes, generate a couples-therapy-specific note in Scriber (which will ensure proper diarization and speaker attribution).
Enable supervisor co-signature in TherapyNotes.
If your practice has supervisors, TherapyNotes' co-signature feature lets the supervisor review your note before it is finalized. The workflow is: you save the note in TherapyNotes, the supervisor receives a notification, they review and sign, and the note is locked. This ensures quality oversight without slowing down your documentation.
Create custom templates for complex cases.
If you see that certain types of cases (e.g., intake notes for clients with trauma history, or progress notes for clients on medication changes) consistently need additional sections, create a custom Scriber template. Tell Scriber to generate intake notes with a "Trauma History" section or progress notes with a "Medication Changes" section. Then copy and paste into TherapyNotes with more complete content right from the start.
Handling TherapyNotes-specific requirements
Progress note vs. intake vs. session note.
TherapyNotes distinguishes between progress notes (for ongoing therapy), intake notes (for first sessions), and other session types. When you generate the note in Scriber, choose the appropriate format. If you are documenting your first session with a client, generate an intake note in Scriber. If it is an ongoing session, generate a progress note. This alignment reduces editing time.
Billing codes and CPT codes.
Scriber does not generate billing or CPT codes (that is business logic, not clinical content). You will select or confirm the billing code in TherapyNotes after pasting the note. Most TherapyNotes configurations auto-populate the code based on session type and duration, so this is usually automatic.
Locked vs. unlocked notes.
Once you save a note in TherapyNotes, you can still edit it until you sign it. After signature, the note is locked (you can add a correction note if needed). Work in Scriber first, so the note is polished before you paste it into TherapyNotes. That way, you are less likely to need to unlock and edit afterward.
Managing patient consent and privacy
TherapyNotes is a HIPAA-covered EHR. Scriber is a HIPAA business associate (BAA signed at signup). The workflow is:
- You record a session in Scriber with patient verbal consent.
- The audio is transcribed and the note is generated (all encrypted in transit).
- You review the note in Scriber (encrypted).
- You copy the note text and paste it into TherapyNotes (encrypted in transit via HTTPS).
- TherapyNotes stores the note in your encrypted account.
The note exists in two places briefly (in Scriber during review, in TherapyNotes after pasting). You can delete the transcript in Scriber after pasting into TherapyNotes if you do not need to retain it. Scriber does not retain the audio file — it is discarded after transcription.
Troubleshooting
Formatting gets corrupted when I paste into TherapyNotes.
TherapyNotes may strip out special formatting. If you need bold or italic text, you can either paste as plain text and manually format in TherapyNotes, or use Markdown formatting and let TherapyNotes' editor render it. Test with one note to see which approach works best in your TherapyNotes version.
The note is longer than I expected.
If the AI-generated note is longer than your typical TherapyNotes notes, you can trim it in Scriber before pasting. Delete redundant sentences or combine related points. You can also edit after pasting into TherapyNotes.
Session type or billing code selection is slow.
TherapyNotes shows dropdowns for session type and billing code. If you see the same session types repeatedly, consider asking TherapyNotes about default settings for your account. Many practices can set "individual therapy, 60 minutes" as the default so you only have to change it if the session was different.
I want to batch multiple notes.
You can record multiple sessions, generate notes in Scriber, and review them all. Then batch copy and paste them into TherapyNotes in one sitting. This is faster than copy-paste immediately after each session because you stay in the workflow.
The roadmap
TherapyNotes is aware that AI scribes want direct integration. An API for clinical notes is on their roadmap. When it ships, you will authenticate Scriber with your TherapyNotes account, and the AI-generated note will have a one-click "Send to TherapyNotes" button. Until then, copy-paste is standard for all AI scribes.
For now, the time savings from using Scriber come from faster note generation and review, not from integrations. The AI-generated SOAP note is ready 80–90% of the way through your review, which is where you get the hour back compared to writing from a blank page.
