Exporting AI-Generated Notes to SimplePractice
Short answer: No direct API integration exists yet between Scriber and SimplePractice. The current workflow is copy-paste: generate the note in Scriber, review it, copy the text, and paste it into SimplePractice's progress note field. This takes 2–3 minutes per note and is the same workflow most clinicians already use for dictation tools or templates.
SimplePractice is the EHR most behavioral-health clinicians use. It works because it is built for therapists, counselors, and psychiatrists, and because it has integrated billing, telehealth, and scheduling. The trade-off until now has been that AI scribes did not integrate directly with SimplePractice, so you could not write from the scribe directly into the chart. That changes with Scriber's multi-engine transcription and custom template support, which make it easy to format notes to match SimplePractice's expected structure.
Why there is no direct integration yet
SimplePractice does not expose a public API for writing clinical notes. Other EHRs (Doxy.me, Some Epic implementations) have APIs that let third-party apps write directly to the chart. SimplePractice requires manual import or uses integrations that SimplePractice itself maintains. Scriber is on SimplePractice's roadmap for integration, but until that is live, the copy-paste workflow is the standard for all AI scribes, not just Scriber.
That workflow is not a limitation — it is how most clinicians work with dictation tools, fax-based chart notes, and templates that originate outside SimplePractice. You are not learning a new process. You are using the same process you already know.
The copy-paste workflow
Step 1: Record the session in Scriber and review the transcript.
Open Scriber on your phone, tablet, or computer. Get verbal consent to record (Scriber has a consent-prompt feature you can enable). Record your session. When the session ends, Scriber transcribes automatically (usually within 30 seconds to 5 minutes depending on which transcription engine you selected). Review the transcript for accuracy. If you see errors, edit them directly in the transcript.
Step 2: Generate the note.
Click "Generate Note." Scriber shows a dropdown of available note formats. If you have set a default for your SimplePractice workflow (SOAP, DAP, BIRP, or a custom template), it will be pre-selected. If not, choose the format that matches your SimplePractice expectations. Click "Generate."
Scriber returns a draft note in under a minute.
Step 3: Review and edit the note in Scriber.
Read through the AI-generated note. Check for:
- Speaker attribution (if couples or group therapy, are statements attributed to the right person?)
- Clinical accuracy (do the findings reflect what you observed?)
- Terminology (are medical terms spelled correctly?)
- Tone (does the note sound like you or generic AI?)
Edit any sections that need adjustment. Most clinicians spend 3–5 minutes here.
Step 4: Copy the note text.
Select all the text in the Scriber note (Cmd+A on Mac, Ctrl+A on Windows, or use the copy button if present). Copy it (Cmd+C or Ctrl+C).
Step 5: Open SimplePractice and navigate to the client's chart.
Log in to SimplePractice. Find the client. Click into today's progress note or create a new progress note if one does not exist.
Step 6: Paste the note into SimplePractice's note field.
Click into the text field where you write progress notes. Paste the text (Cmd+V or Ctrl+V). The text appears in SimplePractice's editor.
Step 7: Review the formatting in SimplePractice.
SimplePractice may re-flow the text depending on your field width and font settings. Scan the note quickly to confirm formatting is correct. If SimplePractice has specific required fields (e.g., "Clinical impression," "Billing codes"), fill those in now.
Step 8: Sign the note.
Click the sign button (or mark as signed, depending on your SimplePractice settings). The note is now in your signed chart and cannot be edited (SimplePractice allows you to modify the signature or add a correction note, but not edit signed notes).
That is the full workflow. Total time: 3–5 minutes for review and copy-paste.
Optimizing the workflow for your practice
Use consistent note templates in Scriber.
Set a default template in Scriber that matches your SimplePractice progress-note format. If you always write SOAP, set SOAP as your default so you do not have to choose it every session.
Configure custom templates for your SimplePractice sections.
If SimplePractice requires specific sections — for example, "Risk Assessment," "Session Focus," "Homework Assigned" — you can create a custom Scriber template that generates notes with exactly those sections. This reduces editing time because the AI already generated the structure SimplePractice expects.
Create a template for supervisor review.
If your practice uses SimplePractice's co-signature feature (supervisor reviews and signs progress notes), set up a custom template that generates notes formatted for supervisory review. Include a "Clinical Reasoning" section so your supervisor can see how you formulated the treatment.
Batch your sessions.
If you record multiple sessions in one day, you can batch the copy-paste work. Record and generate all notes in Scriber, review them all, then copy and paste them into SimplePractice in one sitting. This is faster than doing the copy-paste immediately after each session because you stay in the workflow.
Addressing SimplePractice field requirements
SimplePractice progress notes often have required fields beyond the text note. Scriber's generated note is the text content, but SimplePractice may ask:
- Service type (e.g., "Individual therapy," "Couples therapy," "Psychiatric consultation"): You select this manually in SimplePractice.
- Billing codes (e.g., CPT code for 60-minute therapy session): You select this manually in SimplePractice or let SimplePractice auto-populate based on the service type.
- Clinical impression or diagnosis: The AI-generated note includes this in the Assessment section, but SimplePractice may have a separate field. Copy the Assessment from the Scriber note into SimplePractice's clinical impression field if required.
- Progress toward goals: The AI-generated note usually includes this if it is clinically relevant. Paste it into the SimplePractice progress field if separate from the main note.
Most of these fields are single selections or copy-paste jobs that add 30 seconds to the workflow.
Managing HIPAA and consent in SimplePractice
SimplePractice is a HIPAA-covered EHR. Scriber is a HIPAA business associate (BAA signed at signup). When you copy an AI-generated note from Scriber into SimplePractice:
- The note is already encrypted when it leaves Scriber (via HTTPS).
- SimplePractice receives the note in your private SimplePractice account.
- The note is now stored in SimplePractice's encrypted vault, governed by SimplePractice's retention and access policies.
The consent-to-record step (getting verbal consent before you record the session) is your responsibility. Scriber has a built-in consent-prompt feature if you want to record the consent verbally as part of the session. That recording is transcribed but the audio is discarded, leaving only the transcript and the note.
Troubleshooting
Text formatting does not copy correctly.
SimplePractice's editor sometimes changes bold, italics, or line breaks. If formatting is important for readability, you can manually reformat in SimplePractice after pasting, or you can paste as plain text and let SimplePractice's formatting handle it.
The note is too long for SimplePractice's field.
SimplePractice has field-length limits for some note types. If the AI-generated note exceeds the limit, you can condense it by removing redundant sentences or combining related points. The AI-generated note is a draft, not sacred text. Edit it to fit.
Scriber note format does not match SimplePractice expectations.
If you see that the AI-generated notes consistently do not match how you want notes formatted in SimplePractice, create a custom Scriber template. Document your SimplePractice sections and requirements, and Scriber can generate notes in that exact format from then on.
The path forward
SimplePractice integration is on Scriber's roadmap. When it ships, you will be able to authenticate Scriber with your SimplePractice account, and the generated note will have a one-click "Send to SimplePractice" button. Until then, copy-paste is the workflow, and it is the same workflow you use for any external tool that generates clinical content.
For now, the benefit of Scriber over manual documentation is the speed of the AI-generated draft, the ability to customize templates to match your SimplePractice expectations, and the multi-engine transcription support so you can choose the balance between speed and accuracy that fits your practice. The copy-paste step is three minutes. The note generation and review are where the time savings happen.
